The definite article

Afrikaans only have one definite article, namely die the. The definite article has a variety of meanings, the most important of which is that the subsequent noun is identifiable. The user assumes that the listener / reader can identify what is being referred to (Van Rooy 2017:264). The definite article in Afrikaans does not distinguish between number or gender, as can be seen in the examples below.
