Free relative clauses
quickinfo

The free relative pronoun may have various syntactic functions inside the relative clause. Free relative pronouns are insensitive to grammatical gender. Instead, they rely on semantic gender. There is a mismatch between the free relative pronoun used for persons and the one used for non-persons. The pronominal possessive construction may be turned into a free relative clause functioning as an adverbial clause.
