Deverbal adjectives
quickinfo

Deverbal adjectives are adjectives which are morphologically related to a verb. An example is the adjective ôfhinklikdependent, which is morphologically related to the verb ôfhingje fandepend on. Deverbal adjectives behave like ordinary adjectives with respect to the position of their complement Adposition Phrase (PP), except when they are prefixed with ûn-un-.

Deverbal adjectives allow referential Noun Phrases (NPs) on either side of the adjective:

Example 1

a. Dêr is er fan ôfhinklik
R is he of dependent
He is dependent on that
b. Dêr is er ôfhinklik fan
R is he dependent of
He is dependent on that

PPs with a quantified NP are placed on the left-hand side of the deverbal adjective, as is shown in the examples below:

Example 2

a. Omdat er fan gjin minsk ôfhinklik wêze wol
because he of no person dependent be wants
Because he does not want to be dependent on anyone
b. ?Omdat er ôfhinklik fan gjin minsk wêze wol
because he dependent of no person be wants
Because he does not want to be dependent on anyone

Furthermore, in case the deverbal adjective is prefixed with ûn-un-, it shows a preference for placement on the right-hand side of the deverbal adjective, even in the case of quantifiers:

Example 3

a. Ûnôfhinklik fan inoar kamen se ta dat beslút
independent of each.other came they to that decision
Independent of each other they came to that decision
b. ?Fan inoar ûnôfhinklik kamen se ta dat beslút
of each.other independent came they to that decision
Independent of each other they came to that decision
c. Ûnôfhinklik fan lykfolwa kamen se ta dat beslút
indepent of whoever came they to that decision
Independent of whoever they came to that decision
d. *Fan lykfolwa ûnôfhinklik kamen se ta dat beslút
of whoever independent came they to that decision
Independent of whoever they came to that decision
e. Ûnôfhinklik fan alle ynstânsjes kamen se ta dat beslút
independent of all government.services came they to that decision
Independent of all government services they came to that decision
f. *Fan alle ynstânsjes ûnôfhinklik kamen se ta dat beslút
of all government.services independent came they to that decision
Independent of all government services they came to that decision
